What to Expect

As part of its commitment to maintain high-quality water and service to its customers, the First District Water Department will begin its annual hydrant flushing and valve exercising program on April 30, 2018. Hydrants will be systematically opened to clean the water supply system to your home or business. Due to last year's drought conditions, the annual flushing program was suspended. Throughout the flushing program, we will continue to monitor our water supplies and long range weather conditions. If necessary, the flushing program will be immediately suspended.

However, at the current time, time the First District's reservoirs are full and flowing over the spillways. It is the Water Department's intent to utilize this excess water for the annual flushing program. Through flushing, naturally occurring sand, sediments, non-solidified deposits, loose corrosion by products and other debris can be removed from the water supply system. The flushing is accomplished by opening fire hydrants in the system under controlled conditions. This exercise flushes pockets of stagnated water out of the distribution system and improves the water color, odor, taste and quality.

This year the District will utilize a UniDirectional Flushing System (UDF). UDF is an excellent, water efficient method of cleaning a water supply system to improve water quality and restore capacity. The premise is simple; develop a plan that flushes water from a clean source through a "dirty pipe and out, working in one direction and one segment at a time. By cutting off other flows, scouring velocities are achieved. At these velocities, UDF scours out sediment and corrosion products. Not only is UDF a more effective way of cleaning that conventional flushing, but it uses on average 40 percent less water. Equally important, the sediments are flushed out and not just moved to another pipe.

UDF may cause some temporary discoloration of water in the vicinity of the hydrants being flushed. This discoloration is caused by the disturbance of naturally occurring minerals that have settled in the water mains. The water does not pose a health risk. However, to prepare for discoloration, we advise customers to store tap water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking until the water clears up. Customers should also check the condition of water prior to washing clothes or dishes. If you do experience discoloration, run the cold kitchen tap for 30 minutes or until the water runs clear, whichever is sooner.

To minimize impact on customers the flushing will be performed late at night on the larger diameter water mains, smaller pipes will continue to be flushed during the day.

Please be aware that flushing may also affect water supplied to customers adjacent to the listed areas. Our website will be updated to indicate the location of the following weeks flushing as the program continues through all of the zones within the water supply system.
